COMMISSIONING OF THE UPGRADED GAMMA IRRADIATION FACILITY

The upgrading of the gamma irradiation facility, which has just been completed was undertaken by Izotop Company Limited of Hungary; and this mainly involved:

• Increasing the strength/activity of the Cobalt-60 source to 50 kCi
• Installation of a product transport system
• Provision of a modern control system
• Mounting of a pressurised air system
• Upgrading the ventilation system
• Installation of new safety systems

The upgrading will enhance efficiency of operations and assist the country in diverse ways such as:

i. improving post harvest management of agricultural produce to reduce food losses and therefore contribute to food security.

ii. improving the hygienic quality and phytosanitary status of agricultural exports to meet quarantine requirements of international markets.

iii. improving the hygienic quality of medical products (such as single-use items) and re-usable hospital items (such as surgical equipment and clothing) for enhanced healthcare.
