 | Prof. Dr. Edward H. K. Akaho joined the National Nuclear Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) as a young Chemical Engineering graduate in 1977. Prof. Dr. Akaho has held many senior and high-level positions in the Commission where he has served as a Member of the Commission (1986-1990), Chairman of the Security Committee. He also served on the Research and Technical Committees of the Gamma Irradiation Facility and the Ghana Research Reactor-1 Facility, where he was Project Manager for its installation and commissioning. Presently, Prof. Akaho serves on several committees and in diverse capacities as Member of the Executive Committee of the Commission, Chairman of GAEC/IAEA Country Program Framework (CPF), Member of GAEC's Institutes Promotion Committee and Board Member of the National Nuclear Research Institute. Internationally, Prof. Dr. Akaho served as Member/Alternate Leader of the Ghana Delegation to the IAEA in 1986 and 1990. He has conducted 12 IAEA missions on reactor safety, reactor physics and neutron activation analysis in the sub-region and without. He was IAEA Scientific Expert to Syria (1997) and Nigeria (1998) on the review and preparation of MNSR Safety Analysis Documentation. He has been Project Counterpart of several IAEA Technical co-operation Programs (TCP) and Coordinated Research Program Framework (CRP). He has taught a number of courses at IAEA sponsored international workshops and has participated in a number of IAEA Technical Committees and Advisory Group Meetings. Prof. Dr. E.H.K. Akaho earned his B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Chemical Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (Kumasi), Ghana in 1976. He obtained the M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Science and Engineering and D.I.C. in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology in 1979 from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, UK. In 1982, he was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Queen Mary College of the University of London, UK, where he actively performed research and development into two-phase flows of nuclear systems. Prof. Dr. Akaho is Chief Scientific Officer / Research Professor of Nuclear Engineering. He leads the Thermal Hydraulics (T-HRG) and Reactor Physics Research Groups (RPRG) of the Department and has conducted important researches in diverse fields of nuclear science and engineering. His research interests and fields include neutron physics experiments (neutron transmission and thermal neutron reflection in hydrogenous media), reactor physics calculations (reactor core analysis, reactor noise studies), reactor shielding, reactor thermal hydraulics (steady state core thermal hydraulics and transient analysis of reactor cores), Monte Carlo particle transport, and development of nuclear analytical techniques for neutron activation analysis (neutron flux characterization for k0-standardization). He has authored 36 peer-reviewed scientific publications and co-authored more than 29 conference, technical, research and progress reports. Edward is a family man and is happily married to Dorothy. Elorm, Elipkim and Etornam are his three sons. |
